"The Scartaglen", also known as "Cronin’s", "The Humours Of Newcastle",
"The Humours Of Scartaglen", "The New Post Office", "New Posthouse", "New Road",
"The New Road", "Noelle O’Connor’s", "The Scarta Glen Road"," Scartaglen Road" and
"Tom Billy’s" is an Irish reel in D Major. The parts are played AABB.
Scartaglen or Scartaglin, in Gaelic Scairteach an Ghlinne, is a village and townland in
the Sliabh Luachra area of County Kerry, Ireland. As of the 2011 census, the townland of
Scartaglin had a population of 163 people.
The tune is circular, i.e: the second ending of the B part does not resolve to the tonic "D"
but sets up an easy transition back to the beginning. I added the single measure fine to
end it satisfactorily.
The tune was printed in
Grey Larsen's 150 Gems of Irish Music for Tin Whistle (2015).
It was recorded by
Grey Larsen on 150 Gems of Irish Music for Tin Whistle (2015),
Cherish The Ladies on New Day Dawning (2006),
Déanta on Whisper Of A Secret (1997) and by many others.
